ASK ADVERTISING WITH WINDIGO24: SHOULD I HAVE A LINKEDIN PAGE?
We received a question in one of our meetings about LinkedIn and whether or not it’s vital to a business. If you are unfamiliar, LinkedIn is primarily a networking site for business professionals. It was recently purchased by Microsoft for just over $26 billion, yes billion, dollars. While the site allows you to connect with professionals in your industry or your area, I believe it offers much more value to a business owner than just this. Having a LinkedIn account can really benefit a small business owner.
Here are some reasons why I would strongly suggest you create and maintain a LinkedIn account.
- IT’S FREE MARKETING
As mentioned, LinkedIn allows its users to network with people in similar industries and areas, but it also enables the users to promote their company. LinkedIn allows both personal and business profiles to be created. I maintain a personal account as well as a page for our company, Windigo24 Creative. This is a great resource to post blogs you’ve written, pictures of company events, or recently completed projects. It allows customers or connections to see how you brand your business. Post things that will set you apart from the competition. I like to post our blogs on our page and occasionally an advertising or marketing tip graphic. If you are a dentist, perhaps you can post a Halloween blog on the effect of all that holiday candy. Maybe you do a pro-bono dental cleaning once a year and you post pictures from that event. Anything that will make you stand out is important. Again, LinkedIn’s primary function is to network, but this allows for an extra marketing arm.
- FIND TALENTED PEOPLE
If candidates are looking for jobs, one of the best places they can be is LinkedIn. Because the platform is essentially a social resume, it gives business owners the chance to sift through qualified candidates faster and see which ones match the requirements of the job. LinkedIn allows you to post job listings and find the top people in your area to fill those positions. This ties back to tip #1 because the better your company profile looks, the more willing the candidates will be to show their interest. Market yourself as an outstanding place to work and you will be rewarded with outstanding potential employees.
- BE A PART OF YOUR INDUSTRY COMMUNITY
LinkedIn is home to a number of groups that carry niche members. When I worked for a startup in Sacramento, I joined lots of start-up, incubator, and small business groups via LinkedIn. Not only does this give you access to people close by, it is a great forum for small business owners to express their struggles, share accomplishments, and brainstorm ideas. Some of these groups offer “meetups” or events where you can network further and provide much needed face to face contact with other business owners. Getting involved and contributing to these groups will benefit you and others!
These are just a couple quick points on why LinkedIn is valuable. Fill out the details of your company page and get involved in communities around the site and I believe it will certainly help your business in one capacity or another.
